Seminar Design: Various Application Possibilities with Business Simulations

With management simulations, different seminar concepts can be implemented and flexibly adapted to specific audiences and across learning objectives. In addition to classic classroom lectures, a management simulation can also be used during the semester as a capstone or in an online format with our TOPSIM – Cloud platform. Taking TOPSIM – General Management as an example, we present 3 possible course designs with TOPSIM – Business simulations.

Possible course designs for business simulations

1. Classroom learning concept

When using management simulations in a classroom setting, the decision-making phases in the business simulation are directly integrated into the course. The individual simulation periods and evaluations by the instructor can be complemented with theory units and additional group tasks.

The event is usually held as a block seminar lasting several days and is particularly suitable for connecting the knowledge that has been learned. Group dynamics and social skills of the participants can be observed and trained well in a face-to-face event.

The concept is particularly recommended for heterogeneous target groups who want to achieve a joint level of knowledge.

2. Blended learning concept

In blended learning concepts, the business simulation typically works as a dynamic case study and thus forms the central thread through a course during the semester. In this case the decision-making phases take place outside of the classroom and are organised independently by the participants. Extensive additional tasks and presentations besides the business simulation can be integrated well and can be done in self-study.

Blended learning concepts are particularly well suited for conveying new specialized content and applying learned methods.

3. Distance learning concept

With online concepts, the entire course takes place in distance learning and there is no class attendance component. E-lectures, e-learning contents and the business simulation are interlinked. The business simulation is used to motivate the participants through interactivity and gamified learning. Additionally a competition between the participants can be initiated.

The advantage of the concept is the high scalability of the number of participants. Learners at different locations can participate in a business simulation together and train decision-oriented teamwork via digital communication channels.
